Dear All,

we are pleased to invite you to another Seminar in Empirical Economics taking place at the library of the Institute of Economic Research of the Slovak Academy of Sciences (IER SAS), on:

June 18, 2026 (Thursday) at 14:00 – 15:30

This time, the invitation has been accepted by:

Libor Melioris
(Department of Economics, Trinity College Dublin, Ireland),

delivering a presentation titled:

“Intergenerational Mobility in Income and Education in Slovakia”

Abstract:
This study presents the most detailed estimates to date of intergenerational income mobility and educational mobility. By combining administrative data from the Social Insurance Agency and the Register of Physical Persons, it is possible to include the entire population of people living in Slovakia in the sample under study. Indicators of intergenerational mobility capture the relationship between children’s outcomes and their parents’ income. They make it possible to estimate the level of equality of opportunity or the depth of intergenerational poverty.
The results show that, in international comparison, Slovakia ranks among the countries with higher income and educational mobility. From a gender perspective, it is interesting to note that girls exhibit significantly higher intergenerational mobility than boys. Boys are significantly more likely to replicate their parents’ income status. In both cases, we observe massive regional differences. The income of children from comparable socioeconomic backgrounds is significantly higher if they grew up in districts of western Slovakia or in large cities. In the most disadvantaged districts (southern and eastern Slovakia), fewer than half of children go on to higher education, whereas in Bratislava and Košice, the figure is three-quarters. At the level of correlations, we observe a strong relationship between the unemployment rate among the parents’ generation and indicators of intergenerational mobility. The higher the unemployment rate, the stronger the relationship between parents’ and children’s income.

The seminar will be organized in a hybrid form – for those interested, the speaker and a couple of discussants will be present in the library of IER SAS.
